'AMERICAN HORROR STORY' RETURNS TONIGHT WITH A GREAT 'FREAK SHOW'

What to Watch on TV Tonight (10/8/14):

American Horror Story returns with its fourth season tale, Freak Show, and we just can't contain our excitement. Touted as the most anticipated, and best season yet, Freak Show is a disturbing drama set in Jupiter, Florida circa 1952. Jessica Lange assumes the leadership role once more, this time as German Elsa Mars and her traveling sideshow of freaks called "Elsa's Cabinet of Curiosities." Elsa's freak show is one of the last surviving shows in the country as the idea of circus begins to exclude oddities.

Previous 'AHS' players have returned for this installment including Kathy Bates as the bearded lady Ethel Darling, Angela Bassett as the three-breasted Desiree, Sarah Paulson as two-headed Bette and Dot Tattler, Even Peters as Billy the "Lobster Boy," and Emma Roberts as Maggie Esmeralda the fortune teller.

The main conflict of Freak Show pits the freaks against normal people as Elsa's troupe bands together to battle persecution of the townspeople. Oh and did we mention that a scary murderous clown is killing people?

The premiere episode has such strong imagery that it will transport you the world of the carny. You'll almost be able to smell what's inside those tents. 'Freak Show' airs at 10 pm on FX.

NEW RELEASE TUESDAY (9/2/2014) - TV ON DVD

New Release Tuesday (9/2/2014)

September is typically a busy month for TV-on-DVD releases, aiming for the fans and binge watchers before the new season begin. The 2014-2015 television season doesn't officially kick-off until September 22 but many shows are returning and/or debuting before that date.

Season 2 of Chicago Fire and the first season of its procedural spin-off, Chicago P.D. both hit the shelves today.

Grey's Anatomy fans can relive the final season featuring Cristina with the complete tenth season set. New Girl's see-saw romance that defined Season 3 comes out on DVD.

Additionally, The Originals (spin-off of The Vampire Diaries) and Person of Interest see multiple format releases today. Fans can pick up the DVD/Blu-ray combo of the freshman supernatural series or repeat the death that shocked viewers on the third season of the CBS drama.

FX Networks gets in on the action with the ninth season release of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Season 5 of The League, which comes out just in time for its sixth season premiere this Wednesday.

Summer pirate adventure Crossbones releases its first season on DVD. The fate of the show that follows Blackbeard still remains in the air but viewers can repeat that incredible season (or series) finale.

On the retro TV front, Mill Creek Entertainment continues re-releasing previous Sony sets. This time around, 1970s hits Soap and What's Happening!! each receive a Season 1 & 2 combo release. Individual sets of both shows' seasons are also released.

The first and second seasons of Benson become available as well, and in both combo or individual sets. While Season 1 was originally released to retail in 2007, this is the first time Season 2 gets a retail release. A previous set was offered but only as a Sony MOD DVD-R.

Finally, western TV show fans will be anxious to pick up The Official 7th Season of Bonanza.

WINTER 2014: SETTING FOR NEXT CHAPTER OF 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY' REVEALED

Details of the next chapter in the American Horror Story anthology series are slowly emerging now that Coven is beginning to wind down.

According to series creator Ryan Murphy, the fourth chapter/season/story will be set in the 1950s and the premise of the storyline will be associated with the happenings (national? world?) of that specific time period. AHS staple actress Jessica Lange will make her final appearance in the fourth chapter. The actress announced that she will be departing the FX anthology series after this next season. 

Rumors are circulating that Lange is already at work preparing for her role and that much of it involves her practicing speaking with a German accent. Hmmm...Cold War related? Nazis? Your guess is as good as ours but we are already getting excited about it.

FALL 2013: 'AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN' KEEPS TEASING AUDIENCES

American Horror Story: Coven isn't slated to bow until early October but fans are being teased with trailers just about every other week. The latest installment, Coven, will be a 13-part miniseries about the secret history of witches and witchcraft. Taking place 300 years since the Salem witch trials, those witches who escaped are now facing extinction and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans. AHS staple Jessica Lange returns for this story as Fiona, the Supreme witch that is determined to protect the Coven no matter at what cost, and whoever she has to eliminate. Kathy Bates, Frances Conroy, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Dennis O'Hare, Gabourey Sidibe, Patti Lupone, Emma Roberts, and Leslie Jordan are just part of the ensemble cast. R.I.P. ELMORE LEONARD; REMEMBERING HIS CONTRIBUTION TO TELEVISION

Did you know crime novelist Elmore Leonard inspired several television productions based on his written work? Several of his novels were adapted to TV movies including Gold Coast, Split Images, Glitz, and Pronto. Aside from his extensive film credits, Leonard was the brains behind Maximum Bob, Karen Sisco, and FX's Justified.

Maximum Bob was a short-lived television series based on Elmore Leonard's 1991 novel of the same title. The series was set in the backwoods of Florida, specifically a town called Deepwater. The comedy-drama centered on Judge Bob Gibbs and his world at home and in the courtroom. Eccentric characters shuffling through the court fueled most of the episodic plots. Interestingly, shades of Maximum Bob can be seen in Saturday Night Live's hit-or-miss skit 'Maine Justice.'

Karen Sisco was an adaptation of an adaptation based on another adaptation. It was another short-lived yet considered cancelled-too-soon television drama from 2003. Karen Sisco was a United States Marshal based on Elmore Leonard's character from various novels, as well as the same one featured in the film adaptation of Out of Sight. Based in Miami, the crime drama revolved around Karen Sisco tracking down fugitives in South Beach and Palm Beach.

Justified, which is currently airing on FX, broke the one-season curse for Elmore Leonard. Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is based on the popular character from Leonard's novels Pronto and Riding the Rap, as well as the short story "Fire in the Hole." Set in Lexington, Kentucky during modern times, Givens is a lawman influenced by the Old West style of enforcement and justice. His own brand of justice makes him the target of criminals. Additionally, Givens has to reconcile with his personal demons when relocated back to his hometown in Kentucky, a place he left behind for good.

Elmore Leonard, dubbed the "Dickens of Detroit," passed away today due to complications from a stroke he suffered on July 29, 2013. He was 87 years old.

EXITING 'COMMUNITY' DONALD GLOVER HEADS TO FX

As Community creator Dan Harmon prepares for Donald Glover's impending exit from the NBC comedy, word has leaked that Glover has already inked a new deal with FX. The deal allows Glover to write, direct, and star in a half-hour comedy pilot for the cable network. The project, which is titled Atlanta, will be set against the Atlanta music scene and considering Childish Gambino's musical talents we're not one bit surprised by the move.

Glover has a recurring role in the upcoming season of Community and will be seen in only 5 of the season's 13 episodes. No word on a premiere date but if it isn't October 19 then expect it mid-season in January.

'IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA' SERIES TO END

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia sees its end in the very near future. But don't whip out those hankies just yet, the show will continue on for at least two more seasons. It was revealed today that the FX show will end its run after the tenth season, next year. Fans can expect the normal 13-episode run for the upcoming ninth season, and most likely another 13-episode run for its final season. With an end date in mind, most likely producers will come up with a surefire way to end the show with a bang!

The ninth season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is scheduled to premiere September 4th on FXX, the new channel FX is launching September 2nd. FXX will consist of original shows like It's Always Sunny and The League, as well as air reruns of old Fox television shows.

Soccer fans who enjoy the Fox Soccer network will notice the switch on September 2nd since FXX will be taking over the sports channel. Due to Fox losing U.S. broadcasting rights to air Premier League soccer matches to NBC, a decision was made to retool the channel.
