FALL 2013: COMING TO TV TONIGHT (9/25)!

Tonight sees the return of ABC's comedies, CBS' dramas, and NBC tries out a different schedule.

New & Returning Premieres

The Middle kicks off its fifth season tonight and sees young Axl Heck heading to college. The entire Heck family tags along to help the oldest son move into his college dorm. Only antics and craziness could occur when the Hecks go out in public, right? 8 pm on ABC.

Revolution picks up where it left viewers this past spring. The repercussions of turning the lights back on will be explored and the world that we knew in season one will drastically change. Allegiances and attitudes change within the core cast. NBC is apparently taking a risk and putting sophmore drama Revolution to the test with this new time slot. It will certainly face an uphill battle against ABC's comedy hour and the reality shows on FOX and CBS. Will you be tuning in? 8pm on NBC.

Back in the Game has gained the coveted time slot between The Middle and Modern Family but that isn't necessarily a good thing. The comedy will have a lot to prove to maintain the ratings between the two veteran comedies, and unfortunately first previews have been mixed. Single mom Terry and son move in with her former pro-baseball player father. After her son and a group of unworthy kids aren't considered for a little league baseball team, Terry decides to form her own team a la Bad News Bears. The jury is still out if this old formula will work this time. Surefire it's not. 8:30 pm on ABC.

Modern Family starts off its fifth season with an hour-long episode. The Pritchetts and Dunphys enjoy the final days of summer, and the families deal with Manny and Luke entering their first year of high school. Oh and Cam is teaching again. That should be a riot. 9 pm on ABC.

The 15th season of Law & Order: SVU kicks off with an amazing two-hour premiere. (15 years already, really now?). NBC has spent the latter half of the summer promoting the #SaveBenson campaign. Benson remains missing and held captive. Will the other detectives find her in time? Also, a basement full of kidnapping victims is found thus activating a bunch of cold cases. Hmmm, this sounds recently straight from the headlines. 9 pm on NBC.

Criminal Minds begins its ninth season on the hunt for a killer in Arizona. The season premiere is a two-parter so be prepared for the cliffhanger and tune in next week for the resolution. 9 pm on CBS.

The second season of Nashville focuses on the repercussions after the season ending car crash last May, which was fueled by the revelation that Deacon is Maddie's biological father. Flashforward post-accident: Rayna is in a coma while Deacon is in jail waiting for his sentence. Maddie, however, makes the ultimate mistake and confides the whole drama to the wrong person. Any guesses? 10 pm on ABC.

Season 14 of CSI finds Morgan and Ellie kidnapped by a ritualistic killer. Can D.B. Russell and team find and save them in time? 10 pm on CBS.

Survivor: Blood vs. Water and The X-Factor go head-to-head with new episodes, meanwhile South Park returns to Comedy Central for a 17th season.

NEW RELEASE TUESDAY: SUPERHEROES, MONSTERS, AND DUELING DIVAS

With the start of the fall television season this week, we almost forgot that today is New Release Tuesday. We'll highlight some of the TV-on-DVD releases hitting shelves today.

Superhero Pick-of-the-Week

Arrow - The Complete First Season (BD/DVD)

Filling the gap left by the departure of Smallville, Arrow tells the story of Oliver Queen, his life on a stranded island for five years, and ultimately his evolution to the superhero based on The Green Arrow. Ollie Queen is definitely unique since there is nothing super about his hero persona. Having no special powers or abilities, Arrow is a vigilante by night trying to salvage Starling City from the wrongs of his father. The freshman season establishes the story and cautiously dips into the DC Comics universe, setting it up for the new sophmore season.

Horror Pick-of-the-Week

Grimm - Season 2 (BD/DVD)

NBC's fantasy horror fest Grimm really broke away from the original premise and formed its own shell in the second season. Moving away from direct references to the Grimm Fairy Tales that we have known since childhood, and some that were completely obscure, Grimm delves further into the realms of evil supernatural forces when an ultimate plan to rule the world is revealed. Nick continues hunting down the wicked in Portland while struggling in his home life. Truths, revelations, and bigger baddies were just a few highlights of the sophmore drama.

Drama Pick-of-the-Week

Nashville - The Complete First Season

ABC brought back the primetime soap with Nashville last season. Well, sort of. The drama centers around the veteran and newbie country music divas as they try to keep their careers afloat while watching their personal lives crumble before their very eyes. Lots of singing, sex, drinking, and fighting marked the rookie season, and leading to the explosive season finale that left the fate of several characters up in the air.

Crime Pick-of-the-Week

The Mentalist - The Complete Fifth Season

The Mentalist is one of those shows picked up during the height of the medium-crime fighter dramas that has remained one of CBS' stable staples. Fans of the show will want to catch up with the fifth season since the "Red John" killer is slated to reach its apex during the upcoming fall season. It's also the last season that will feature Agents Rigsby and Van Pelt in a full-time capacity before they are written off later this year.

Canceled-Too-Soon Pick-of-the-Week

Vegas - The DVD Edition

The short-lived period drama Vegas premiered on CBS with decent ratings and positive reviews. The 1960s drama that focused on the battle between a Las Vegas sheriff and a Chicago mobster slowly fizzled as it progressed through the year, and after being moved around in several time slots, the show was completely scrapped. Fans of the show can own the collection which pits good versus evil at the heart of America's Sin City. (Sidenote: Stay Tuned is curious about the use of the phrase "The DVD Edition" instead of "The Complete Series." That only tells us that CBS and Paramount have edited the series from the original broadcasting. The culprit most likely would be music rights).

The Marlon Copeland Pick-of-the-Week

Adventure Time - Volume 5: Jake the Dad

Fraternity brother Marlon Copeland swears up and down that Adventure Time is one of the best animated shows currently airing on Cartoon Network. He would be excited about this Jake and Dad set. Fans of the show, like Marlon, don't need much information about the DVD set. They'll just purchase it.

FALL 2013: FIRST-LOOK AT 'NASHVILLE' SEASON PREMIERE

Fans of ABC's Country music sudser Nashville have been treated to the first-look promo for the upcoming season premiere episode. The season opener will deal with the repercussions of last Spring's cliffhanging car accident.

Nashville returns September 25.

FALL 2013: NBC 'PARKS AND REC' PREPS TWO STARS' EXITS; 'NASHVILLE' ADDS NEW ROLE

The Fall 2013 hasn't even started yet and there are already casting shake-ups and rumblings being felt on the television landscape.

Parks and Recreation fans will only have 13 episodes left to enjoy the Chris Traeger and Ann Perkins coupling. Rob Lowe and original cast member Rashida Jones will be departing the NBC comedy midway through the season, their last episode will most likely air in February. Last spring's season finale saw Chris and Ann trying hard to have a baby. From all indications, that storyline will be the set up for the first half of the upcoming season and will hopefully set up the off-again, on-again couple on a shared ride into the sunset. The exits aren't necessarily too surprising since both actors have other projects in the works; Jones is penning a script for her development deal with Warner Bros. Television and Lowe is focusing on the impending release of Killing Kennedy, a movie set to premiere on Nat Geo where the actor tackles the lead role of John F. Kennedy.

Oliver Hudson sure knows how to land on his feet and find new work. The former star of CBS' surprisingly long lasting comedy Rules of Engagement wasn't left in limbo too long after the show's cancellation last May. The actor has been picked up for a recurring role on ABC's Nashville. Hudson will play a record label executive who will be thrown into the Deacon/Rayna storyline for the show's sophmore season. It's no secret that the two lead characters will survive the car accident cliffhanger from last season and the show will jump forward several months when it starts up again on September 25.
